Биография

Родился 15 ноября 1932 года в Анн-Арбор штата Мичиган в семье голландских эмигрантов кальвинистского исповедания.

В 1954 году получил степень бакалавра гуманитарных наук в Кальвиновском колледже (англ.)русск..

В 1955 году получил степень магистра гуманитарных наук в Мичиганском университете.

В 1958 году получил степень доктора философии в Йельском университете^[2].

В 1958—1963 годах — профессор Университета Уэйна.

В 1963—1982 годах и с 2010 года — профессор Кальвиновского колледжа (англ.)русск..

В 1982—2010 годах — профессор Университета Нотр-Дам.

В 1992 году философ посетил Россию, выступив с лекциями в Москве и Новосибирске.

Основные идеи

В течение долгой академической карьеры Плантинга внес значительный вклад в различные области философского знания: в религиозной эпистемологии, свободы воли, проблемы зла, природы Бога, концепции христианской философии. Особенное место в его творчестве занимает Sensus divinitatis — врождённое ощущение божественности^[3].

Оценки

Ещё в 1980 году журнал «Time» охарактеризовал этого автора как «ведущего мирового протестантского философа», а в 2001 году на страницах журнала «Christianity Today» он был назван «не только лучшим христианским философом своего времени», но и «наиболее значительным философом среди всех направлений»^[4].

В 2001 году кандидат философских наук Ф. Ю. Бородин отмечал, что «Плантинга настаивает на том, что рациональность требует от учёного теистических воззрений, что тезис о существовании Бога не нуждается в обосновании посредством дискурсивного рассуждения, что состоятельность положений науки должна быть проверена на предмет соответствия утверждениям Библии и на этом основании отвергает дарвиновское учение о происхождении видов»^[5].
